BAM hosts the annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—on Monday, January 18 at 10:30am in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (Peter Jay Sharp Building, 30 Lafayette Avenue). The celebration, now in its 30th year, brings together artists and civic leaders to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King. This year’s keynote address will be delivered by best-selling author, renowned public intellectual, and cultural critic Michael Eric Dyson, whose pioneering scholarship has had a profound effect on American ideas. His books include bestsellers Making Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X, Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?, and April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death and How It Changed America. He has appeared on numerous major media outlets—The Today Show, Nightline, O’Reilly Factor, The Tavis Smiley Show, and Real Time with Bill Maher. In addition, he hosts an hour-long news and talk program on NPR, The Michael Eric Dyson Show, where he delivers thoughtful analyses of today’s topical stories.
BAM president Katy Clark said, “Now in its 30th year, BAM’s annual tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. has been New York’s largest event honoring Dr. King and his legacy. I’m proud to participate in this community tradition for the first time, and look forward to many celebrations to come.”
