Celebrate with the Schomburg staff, February’s First Friday: Black History Month/African Edition!—there will be live music, signature drinks, and extended gallery viewing hours. The event will be hosted by Sahara FM Radio, Africa’s newest station for arts, music and politics, and emceed by the station’s own ‘Olu,’ the Humble Prince.
With extended viewing hours, explore the two newest exhibitions: Curators’ Choice: Black Life Matters and Coming Home: Remembering.
In addition, there will be a mini-showcase African Film Festival, from 3pm to 7pm, sponsored by SunnEvents in the American Negro Theatre. Screenings of: Pumzi (Kenyan) , a short sci-fi film, Mother of George (a Nigerian-American drama), and Soul Power (concert documentary set in Zaire).
DJ Nani will be spinning tracks in the Langston Hughes lobby, expressing the unique sounds of Africa that will further enhance the theme of the evening.
The dance and drumming group, AsaseYaa, will perform. This First Friday event will feature hors d’oeuvres from New York African Restaurant Week, a bi-annual cultural event celebrating the best of African cuisine, wine, chefs, artisans and restaurants from across the city. Season Pot Catering will provide appetizers. Other restaurants present: MadibaHarlem, Farafina Cafe and Lounge and Lenox Saphire!
