Short Plays to Nourish the Mind & Soul presents a staged reading of PRETTY.
Written by Cesi Davidson & Directed by Mary Hodges.
PRETTY, is inspired by the Oscar Wilde quote, True friends stab you in the front. In this play, stabbing with words and unkind acts is a typical practice among mother Willa and adult twins Travis and Timothy. The assaults mask the pain they each feel as a result of struggles with issues related to complexion, and acceptance. Travis supports this family living on a marginalized economic edge. Mother Willa fairly copes with her mental illness and her unresolved memories of her past life in a segregated Black southern town. Timothy exploits daily the emotions and finances of the family. The apartment lights are turned off for non-payment of the electric bill. When the energy is restored the illusion of “pretty” is revealed.
