Ronnie Dyson: A Tapestry of Gospel, Soul, and Theater

Throughout history there have been many talented individuals who have graced the stage and left a lasting impact on the world of music, film and theater. In his youth, Ronnie Dyson along with Fredricka Washington (Daughter of the pastor Bishop Frederick Douglas Washington) captivated the standing room only parishioners at Washington Temple COGIC (Church of God in Christ) in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn with their much anticipated energizing gospel duets . My family and I, parishioners, religiously made it a point not to miss these performances which were normally scheduled midway through Bishop Washington rousing sermons. Ronnie and Fredricka’s harmonious voices and heartfelt gospel renditions were a testament to their passion for gospel music. They spread joy through song. Without a doubt, we churchgoers looked forward to the stimulating duets.
As Ronnie Dyson entered his teens, he began to make a name for himself in the world of entertainment. His talent and charisma caught the attention of Broadway producers. This led to his debut in several successful productions.
His soaring falsetto and captivating stage presence quickly garnered him loyal following. Critical acclaim followed. One of Ronnie Dyson’s most memorable roles was in the hit musical “Hair”. He wowed audiences with his rendition of “Aquarius” His performance received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. It solidified his reputation as a rising star in the industry. Dyson continued to showcase his vocal prowess in the Broadway production of “Starvation” and he also appeared in the 1969 film “Putney Swope”. In addition to his success on Broadway Ronnie Dyson also made a name for himself in the music industry.

Despite achieving fame and success at such a young age Ronnie Dyson remained humble and grateful. He appreciated the opportunities that came his way. He continued to sporadically return to Washington Temple Baptist Church where he first honed his craft alongside Fredricka Washington.

Washington Temple Church Of God In Christ, not Baptist church. I was a member there from 1968-2000. Ronnie was indeed a talented vocalist. For a while he also played on Washington Temple’s basketball team with myself and others.
