Story
In 1948, Gordon Parks became the first African-American staff photographer for Life magazine. Through his powerful images, he documented the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans during a time of deep racial inequality. His iconic photograph American Gothic, Washington, D.C. (1942) depicted a Black cleaning woman standing in front of the American flag, a haunting critique of the nation’s broken promises.
