Josephine Baker, née McDonald on June 3, 1906, was a groundbreaking performer and activist who made lasting impact on the entertainment industry and the fight for civil rights. Born in St. Louis Missouri in 1906, Baker began her career as a dancer in vaudeville shows. She later moved to Paris in the 1920s. There she gained international fame for her performances at the Folies Bergère.
Baker’s unique style and charisma captivated audiences around the world. She quickly became one of the most famous performers of her time. She was known for her energetic dance routines. Her elaborate costumes and bold personality challenged traditional ideas of race and gender on stage.
In addition to her success as an entertainer Baker was also passionate advocate for civil rights. She used her platform to speak out against racial injustice. She spoke out against discrimination. She became a prominent figure in the struggle for equality. Both in America and abroad.
During World War II, Baker worked as a spy for the French Resistance. She used her celebrity status to gather information about German troops. She then relayed it back to Allied forces. Her bravery earned her several medals of honor from the French government making her one of only a few American civilians to receive such recognition.
After the war, Baker continued to be involved in social justice causes. She spoke out against segregation in America; supported the Civil Rights Movement led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr; was an outspoken advocate for women’s rights; and defended LGBTQ+ rights long before these issues gained widespread attention.
