Manhattan
In this Valentine’s Day salute to the love song, Jessye Norman shows us a different side of her talent by choosing some of the most beloved songs of the Great American Songbook, including classics from Jerome Kern and George Gershwin to Duke Ellington and Leonard Bernstein. But there’s a French subtext to this romantic evening, too, in three songs in that language by such masters as Francis Poulenc and Erik Satie. In closing, Miss Norman returns to the world of opera, where she has created so many indelible portrayals, and Georges Bizet’s alluring but dangerous gypsy heroine, Carmen.
