🍾Whoopi Goldberg, (aka Caryn Elaine Johnson), born November 13, 1955, in Manhattan — her growing up turf was in a housing project in the Chelsea section of Manhattan.
Whoopi was named Caryn Elaine Johnson at birth, but is she known around the world, as, and yes, the comedic Whoopie Cushion. Her entertainment career began in improvisation and standup comedy. In the mid-1980s, she had a prominent role in the movie The Color Purple, Ghost, Sister Act, How Stella Got Her Groove Back. She has also done voiceovers for cartoons and films, including The Lion King as Shenzi; A Christmas Carol, The Ghost of Christmas Present; and Toy Story 3, Sketch. Whoopi’s body of film-work, as an actress, presently exceeds 150 films; she’s co-host on daytime talk show “The View”; and she loves the Star Trek series so much, that she’s auditioned and acted in the TV franchise. You may have seen Whoopi many times as well on TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Whoopi Goldberg Show. But this list only scratches the surface of this multitalented performer.Whoopi’s written numerous non-fiction books for children and adults; her accolades include a Tony, Grammy Drama Desk awards; and she’s been nominated by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Golden Globe.
Apart from Whoopi’s film-works, improv and standup comedy, she has been involved in philanthropic causes; activism various causes: racial justice, women’s rights, human rights, AIDS research, and children’s issues; and she’s participated in Comic Relief — a major charity based in the UK which strives to create a just world, free from poverty.
