Premiering in 1934, Amateur Night at the Apollo is the Theater’s signature talent competition and its longest running performance series. Amateur Night paved the way for such series as Star Search and American Idol. Competitions are held on Wednesday evenings throughout the year, culminating in the Super Top Dog competition for the grand prize of $10,000. The show merges world-class talent, a distinctive, vaudeville-like atmosphere, and the Apollo’s famously vocal audience. Amateur Night provides a platform where aspiring performers from all walks of life can showcase and develop their skills. It has proven an effective measure of star potential, launching the careers of many of the world’s most influential performers. In 2014, the Apollo celebrates the 80th Anniversary of this historic program.
This season features guest artists and a number of themed nights. Amateur Night is hosted by the comedian Capone and each show begins with a pre-party featuring Set If Off Man Joe Gray and DJ Jess. The show also features master impressionist and tap dancer C.P. Lacey as the “Executioner”.
