Birthday Greetings “Dick” Bahamian Diet Gregory
🎂Richard “Dick” Claxton Gregory, born October 12, 1932, was raised in St. Louis, MO. Dick Gregory was known for his groundbreaking political and segregation satires and his avid civil rights activism. He authored and co-authored numerous books — autobiographies, self-help guides, comedy novels, cookbooks and political primers. Dick was a health activist, too. He used hunger strikes to bring attention to societal unfairness against the defenseless.
There were many Dick Gregory critics who from afar looked askance at his outlandish hypotheses on the body’s endurance. He, more often than not, would prove his hypotheses were spot on. For example, in 1976 Dick Gregory ran from Los Angeles to New York City (approximately 3,500 miles) in order to bring attention to world hunger. Averaging 50 miles a day, for 71 consecutive days, he consumed only Formula X — a dietary supplement he created. Its cost — a mere 38 cents a day. The formula contained sufficient nutrients to sustain the rigorous run.
In New Orleans in 1981, Gregory fasted 70 days, drinking water only. He wanted to prove that Bobby Sands, a young Irish IRA rebel, did not starve to death, but he died due to the chemical poisons present in the tap water he drank. Dick Gregory’s fast mandated that bottled spring water (in glass bottles) or tap water was to be set out in wide topped containers (i.e. pots, buckets) for 48-hours. He surmised that the 48 hour procedure would eliminate harmful chemicals in the water. After 70 days of a diet absent of nutrients, Dick Gregory drank, for 7 days, his nutrient Formula X. (Later, it marketed as Dick Gregory’s Bahamian Diet ®).) After his fast, Dick Gregory ran 100 miles to Baton Rouge as a way to give thanks to God for proving his point. Dick Gregory was a fierce and fearless trailblazer. He opened many eyes and raised the consciousness of all who took notice of how he navigated the planet.
